Play Tennis Or Pickleball Like a Pro at Victoria Park’s US Open Blue Courts

pickleballThe US Open is the grand tennis spectacle of these United States.  Watch the suspense as the games ramp up is a great reminder of the joy of being on the court.  Victoria Park has no shortage of such athletic options for residents. One of the stand-out amenities at the community are the US Open replica tennis courts at Victoria Commons. The two popular activities played at the courts are tennis (of course) and pickleball.  The latter is one of the fastest growing recreational sports in America and there is no shortage of enthusiasm with Victoria Park residents.

Pickleball is a sport hybrid, which has recently seen a surge in popularity. The sport takes elements from tennis, table tennis, and badminton. The court is the same size as badminton with a tennis-style net set two inches lower to the ground than a standard net. The game uses a small wiffle-ball that a player strikes a with a hard paddle. The rules are similar to that of table tennis, and though the speed is slower, the ball is in action more often. Pickleball is a great alternative for players of all ages but is perfectly suited for older tennis enthusiasts looking for a little more forgiveness on the legs and shoulders.

Pickleball is said to have began in 1965 at the home of a Washington state representative named Joel Pritchard. The odd name has two rumored origins. One is that Joan Pritchard remarked the sport reminded her of a pickle boat crew: one made of the leftovers of other teams. The second, and most retold, states that it was named after the family’s dog, pickle. What ever the origins, pickleball is the new court sport of choice for active adults.

Tennis, and all related court games, are never more popular in the states then during the US Open, and as the excitement of the matches progress toward the finals this weekend the country embraces tennis madness. Residents of Victoria Park can enjoy watching the games, but they can also play their own matches like the professionals at Victoria Commons US Open Blue style courts. There are tennis programs managed by Victoria Park Director of Tennis Kurt Collis, owner of KC Tennis Academy. This includes the recent implementation of a 10 years and under tennis program for up and coming tennis superstars. The courts are lighted at night and are just one more reason why Victoria Park is the premier master-planned community in the DeLand, Fl area.

The current pickleball play times are Monday at 6:30 PM and Wednesday and Friday at 8:30 AM or after. These are open play times on the courts in the Commons, and everyone who resides in Victoria Park is welcome to play. Pickle balls and a limited number of paddles are available at Victoria Commons tennis court.

If you are visiting the model homes at Victoria Park be sure to stop by and check out the courts.

The V’s created by the thumbs and forefingers of each hand should point to the right shoulder for an anti-slice grip.
